HomeEast Atlantic Plumbing LLC Blog, Wilmington, NCWater Heater Installation in Wilmington, NC: What to Expect From First Call to Hot Water

A water heater can fail with little warning. One morning the shower runs cold, or you notice a puddle around the base of the tank, and suddenly it is the most important appliance in the house.

If you live in Wilmington or one of the surrounding towns, the good news is that water heater installation is a routine job for us. This guide walks through what happens, what shapes the job, and how to plan so you can pick your new unit on your own schedule.

Is it time to replace your water heater?

Most tank water heaters last about 10 years, and once yours passes the seven-year mark it is smart to start planning. Watch for these signs:

  • Water that swings from hot to cold, or never gets as hot as it used to.
  • Hot water running out faster than it did.
  • Rusty or discolored hot water, or a metallic taste.
  • Rumbling or popping noises from the tank, often a sign of sediment buildup.
  • Moisture, drips or pooling water around the base.
  • An aging unit that has quietly pushed your energy bills up.

Our guide to water heater lifespan and the signs yours needs replacing goes deeper on each of these. If the tank itself is leaking, you need a new water heater, because a leaking tank cannot be patched.

Local water can play a part too. The USGS notes that when hard water is heated, scale can form and reduce the life of equipment such as water heaters. The CFPUA 2025 Drinking Water Quality Report lists an average hardness of 50 mg/L (range 39 to 62) for the CFPUA-Wilmington system, which the USGS scale calls soft. For the Wrightsville Beach system it lists an average of 78 mg/L, which is moderately hard, with readings from 23 to 330 mg/L. These are system-wide figures for CFPUA customers, so the water at your own tap can differ.

What happens on installation day

Every home is a little different, but a water heater installation with East Atlantic Plumbing follows the same four steps:

  1. Assessment. We look at your current setup and how your household uses hot water.
  2. A clear recommendation. We recommend tank or tankless, gas or electric, and the right size for your home, and we give you clear pricing before any work starts.
  3. Professional installation. Our licensed plumbers install the unit to code and clean up when they finish.
  4. Testing and walkthrough. We make sure everything is running correctly and show you the basics.

A standard tank replacement is often finished in a few hours. A first-time tankless conversion can take longer if gas, electrical or venting upgrades are needed, and we will give you a clear timeline up front.

What affects the job

The cost and length of the job depend on five things:

  • Tank or tankless. Tankless units cost more up front, especially when you are converting from a tank for the first time.
  • Capacity. A bigger household needs a higher-capacity unit.
  • Gas or electric. Switching fuel types, or upgrading existing lines and venting, adds work.
  • Where the unit lives. An attic, crawlspace or tight closet takes more labor than an open utility room.
  • Permits and code. The installation should be done to code and inspected the way it is supposed to be. In New Hanover County, the county’s Do I Need a Permit chart lists a water heater replacement as needing no permit when a licensed contractor installs it, and as needing electrical/gas and plumbing permits when a homeowner does it (DIY). The chart covers replacements, so a change such as switching fuel type or adding a tankless unit may need permits. Ask us how your job is handled.

Questions to ask any plumber before you say yes

Whoever you hire, a good plumber should be comfortable answering these:

  • Are you licensed for this work?
  • How did you size the unit for my home?
  • Will the installation be done to code, and how are permits and inspections handled?
  • What exactly is included in the quote, including removal of the old unit?
  • What does the warranty cover on the unit and on the labor?
  • How long will I be without hot water?

We are glad to answer every one of them. East Atlantic Plumbing is a local, family-owned company that has served the Wilmington area since 1985.

Plan ahead, or call us when it fails

Replacing a water heater on your own timeline gives you room to compare options and choose what fits your budget. Waiting for a failure leaves you making the decision with no hot water and possibly water on the floor.

One customer wrote that when their water heater failed on a Friday afternoon, our techs were there within an hour and had a new unit installed within a couple of hours. If a failure does happen, including on a weekend or after hours, we offer 24/7 emergency service. You can read more about our water heater replacement work, or about what to know about water heaters before you decide.

We install water heaters in Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Leland and Hampstead, and across the surrounding New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender County areas. See all of our service areas.
